This is a ’98 reissue of the Guild S-100 Polara from the
1970’s, itself a variation on the Gibson SG theme, but with hotter pick-ups.
The guitar has a solid mahogany body, contoured and with
dual cutaways. The finish is vintage
white, which is more of a buttermilk yellow or faint cream color – very cool, I
think. (Some of the photos make it look
a little whiter than it really is.)
The headstock has the mother of pearl Guild “Chesterfield” logo inlay
and sports Grover tuners made for Guild.
The fretboard is rosewood with pearl block inlays; the frets are in
excellent shape. This guitar has strap
locks installed on it and comes with a compatible black nylon webbed strap.
The neck is a fairly slim, modified “C” shape, neither too
slender nor too fat, just comfortably in-between. The scale length is 24-3/4” and the action is
low and comfortable. No buzzing. It has the adjustable bridge and the iconic slanted stop tailpiece from the '70s era Polara and Bluesbird guitars.
The configuration is standard “SG” – dual humbuckers with
dual tone and volume knobs. However, as
with most Guild solid bodies, there is a phase reversal toggle switch that you
can use when both pick-ups are on. This
guitar produces big, classic humbucker tones – excellent for rock!
One of the characteristics I look for in solid body guitars is natural resonance, even when played unamplified -- and this guitar has that in spades! Buckets of tone!
I have described this guitar as VG to VG+ condition. It has definitely been played and you will
notice dings here and there, including a couple of small gouges where the
finish is removed down to the mahogany body – I have captured the most
noticeable ones in photos – one is on the top back of the head stock; another
is the side and edge below the control knobs.
There is also some belt buckle rash on the back (although not worn
through the finish) and a fairly heavy amount of pick scratches on the
multi-layer (B/W/B/W/B) pick guard.
But in my opinion, the patina just adds to the serious vibe
of this instrument. It plays and sounds
There is no hard shell case with this one, but it will be
shipped with a very nice padded TKL gig bag that is in excellent shape.
Guitar will be packed with extra care and shipped fully
insured to the lucky new owner.
