THIS AUCTION: FOR A SOMEWHAT RARE NEARLY 43 year old 1967 GUILD D-50 SB BLUEGRASS SPECIAL with BRAZILIAN BACK AND SIDES. IT IS 1 of APPROXIMATELY 600 BRAZILIAN GUILD's MADE IN HOBOKEN. IT IS REFINISHED SO a PLAYER as to condition - it is sold as is. INTERESTING DOCUMENTS INCLUDED: THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY CARD PAPERWORK AND 'THE CARE OF YOUR NEW GUILD' FLIERS. SERIAL NUMBER AL 339 ON WARRANTY CARD MATCHES SERIAL NUMBER ON BACK OF HEADSTOCK. THE ORIGINAL LABEL INSIDE THE SOUND HOLE IS GONE.
This guitar sounds great; it IS LOUD, RICH AND SUSTAINS LIKE BRAZILIAN SHOULD. HAS A STRONG BASS PRESENCE.
This is a lower cost alternative to a 1960's Martin D-28 that used Brazilian wood into 1969.
Note to international bidders (I prefer to sell in North America but will consider sale overseas on a case by case basis)
This attractive guitar has had top restoration work done to repair cracks and during the process the owner elected to convert the top to a tobacco sunburts - it is attractive BUT not correct to this guitar. The back and sides appear very close to an original finish BUT I am certain they have had some finish work as well - if I'm correct, it has been very nicely executed.
I understand that the refinish work hurts collectibility and value. That is why opening is set below 2 grand. A reasonable BIN is also available at a very reduced $1,895!! If you want a low cost alternative to a Brazilian Martin D-28 this could be your chance!!
COMMENTS:
1) no cracks on back and sides.
2) Repaired top cracks below bridge near center seam and a couple others that are hard to see due to the nice restoration work.
3) The Grover tuners work fine.
4) Nice, high bone saddle
The following are the 'pluses' to this fine player status guitar:
1) Fairly rare (I'm not sure but I believe Guild only made around 600 or 700 Brazilian D-50's from 1964-1969 - maybe there is a Guild expert who can give us a precise count)
2) The internals look to be all original.
3) The fretboard and Brazilian bridge are believed original.
4) neck width at the nut is 1 11/16".
5) Did I mention the sound??
NEGATIVES
1) Pick guard is a replacement.
2) refinished (albeit attractively done)
Here is a dimensional question I have been asked:
Q: What is
the total width of the strings above the saddle on this model?
What is the height of the saddle above the bridge?
Thanks
A: Total string width on
the saddle is 2 1/8".
Saddle height is 5/32".
Thanks for your interest.

This vintage guitar is used and has nicely repaired FLAWS noted and is a player - it will likely never be collectible due to refinish work but it creates an opportunity for the player who needs Brazilian rosewood for his music!
-
Frets are great and the fretboard is also very nice.
-
Neck is a C-profile. Action is fine. String height at the 12th fret: between 3/32" and 1/8" on high e string and just over 1/8" on low E string. There is a lot of saddle height. It could probably be lowered by nearly 1/16"
